Meet Ralf Zuber
Managing Director at Gigahertz Optik GmbH
How Ralf takes on responsibility by doing things the right way
Ralf is someone who doesn’t believe in half measures. Whether in research, leadership, or sports: he’s committed to doing things thoroughly and with intention. Responsibility, for him, isn’t a title. It’s what naturally follows when you take things seriously.
Before becoming Managing Director, he led R&D and helped develop innovative technologies. Today, he carries responsibility not only for products and progress, but also for the people behind them. His mindset: accept the constant change in our world and actively help shape it.

What does Moving Forward mean to you?
For me, Moving Forward means not just watching change happen, but actively shaping it wherever we can. The world is spinning faster every day. That’s not always comfortable, but we can’t stop it. What we can do is adapt. And see it as an opportunity.
It’s a bit like sports: you always have to stay on it, keep developing, or — as I’m noticing more with age — adjust along the way. In that sense, that’s what Moving Forward means to me.
How do you stay mentally and physically fit?
By being outdoors. I cycle a lot of miles every year, go climbing, and in winter I do ski touring. Being active in nature helps me unwind and clears my head. Sometimes you need to look into the distance to see everyday things more clearly.
The repetitive motion of cycling or ski touring has a meditative quality for me. And the versatility of climbing is a great complement. Plus a healthy counterbalance to all the sitting that comes with the job.
What are you proud of?
I’m proud that I’ve managed to balance family, friends, work, and my passion for sports. I never pursued a career just for the sake of a career. What mattered to me was doing things the right way. Giving them the importance they deserve. When you take things seriously and commit yourself, responsibility tends to follow naturally. And it’s incredibly rewarding to accomplish things together as a team.
What does good teamwork mean to you?
Good teamwork is built on respect, trust, and a shared goal to actually achieve something. I’ve never been a fan of top-down approaches. Our topics are complex. That requires open discussions and people who want to think along and contribute. And it requires trust. Trust that we’ll get there together. When the atmosphere is right and everyone chips in, that’s when real solutions emerge.
And we should never forget how valuable good collaboration is. We spend so much of our lives at work. All the better when we can share that time with great colleagues in a respectful, trusting environment.
Is there something new you’d like to try? Something you’ve never done before?
I’ve tried many things. I’ve crossed the Alps by bike several times — from the foothills of the Alps all the way to Lake Garda — and I’d love to do that again. With kids, it’s not so easy at the moment, but that time will come back.
There’s so much left to experience. I traveled a lot before having kids; now family comes first. And that’s exactly how it should be. Everything has its time. Some things pause; others return. That’s the beauty of life. There’s so much out there to explore. The main thing is to stay healthy and stay open to new things.
And of course, there are still things I want to do… but I don’t have to reveal everything here ;)
