Meet Sjoerd Slagter
Manager Sales & Customer Support at Berghof Membranes and part of the Management Team
From teamwork to customer success: How Sjoerd helps move things forward
As Manager Sales & Customer Support at Berghof Membranes, Sjoerd turns complexity into clarity. Based in Leeuwarden (The Netherlands), he and his team shape smart membrane solutions that truly move customers forward: from technical offers to pilot support and smooth plant start-ups.
But what really drives him? Helping people grow: whether it’s his team, his customers, or his kids. With empathy, curiosity, and a clear sense of direction.

What does Moving Forward mean to you?
For me, Moving Forward has two sides. Personally, it’s about recognizing potential and supporting people – whether my team or my kids – in finding their strengths and growing from there. Professionally, it’s about being creative, thinking outside the box, and making the most of each person’s abilities so we can grow together as a team and as a company. The better we empower our people internally, the better we can deliver solutions that truly move our customers forward. I see myself more as a guide: someone who asks the right questions, helps others move forward with confidence, and moderates between perspectives to find the best path for everyone – inside and outside the company.
How do you stay mentally and physically fit?
My road bike is my daily reset button. I ride to and from work several days a week. Not just for fitness, but also for mental clarity. When I leave the city and arrive home, I’m really home. Present, calm, grounded. Biking is my way to process thoughts, release stress, and stay balanced. When I skip it, I feel the difference.

When was the last time you did something for the first time – and what did you learn?
I recently started learning Spanish. Partly for fun, partly to better connect with our Spanish-speaking colleagues. Language is a key to culture.
Also, helping my 5-year-old daughter with her schoolwork has been a whole new challenge: kids reflect your own communication style. They teach you to be clearer, more structured – and patient. Funny enough, that mirrors a lot of what I do at work: break down complexity, stay focused, and guide without overwhelming.
What’s a strength that defines your team?
Dedication. In our small team, everyone goes the extra mile, even when tasks fall outside their official role. What holds us together is a strong willingness to support each other and to keep learning.
I don’t see myself in the spotlight. I see myself more as a coach on the sidelines. Someone who creates the conditions for others to grow, stay motivated, and move toward a shared goal – whether that’s a team target or a successful outcome for our customers.

If you could coach anyone for a day: Who would it be?
Honestly? Kids. They have so much untapped energy, and often not the space to use it. I’d love to coach them on the importance of movement and healthy eating. Many people still underestimate how powerful those two things are. Teaching kids how physical activity and balanced nutrition shape not just the body but also the mind. That’s something I’d really enjoy. Awareness and small changes early on can have a big impact later. Just like in business: when you invest in the right mindset and habits, it pays off over time. For teams and for customers alike.
