At a cost of some 2.1 million euros the town of Friedrichshafen has commissioned the remediation of another, approximately 5.2-acre area of the almost 34.5-acre industrial park on the grounds of the former Löwenthal Barracks near Friedrichshafen Airport. Berghof Analytik + Umweltengineering GmbH & Co. KG in Weingarten has been commissioned by Friedrichshafen to explore the historical burdens and building fabric and carry out the work for an invitation to tender for the demolition and removal of weapons and munitions and to provide the site management. We will work to support the customer in resource-efficient land development and in the creation of industrial real estate all the way through from conception and the exploration phase to selective renaturation (recycling of derelict areas). Furthermore, for this project Berghof was in a position to apply its special experience with the renaturation and remediation of military real estate, including the coordination of the investigation and disposal of arms and munitions.
Since mid-June 2009 the entire site has been searched for arms and munitions and cleared. Under the direction of Berghof the company responsible for the disposal of the arms and munitions has already discovered a wide variety of ammunition (FLAK grenades, MG ammunition, stick-type incendiary bombs…) and war scrap (steel helmets, rifle barrels,…). This legacy from the Second World War, some of which is highly explosive, is being salvaged by a private company; the state arms and munitions disposal service in Stuttgart is handling their destruction.

Also after the Second World War the subsequent users, the French armed forces left behind a good deal of historical burdens. The majority of what flowed out of the gas stations, maintenance halls or vehicle washing facilities into the earth has meanwhile been investigated, successively removed and professionally recycled / disposed of. Since 2002 during renaturation and remediation measures some 6 tons of munitions have been salvaged and around 250,000 tons of earth has been shifted.

When the renaturation and remediation work has been completed, Friedrichshafen will be able to provide another premium area for establishing commercial and service operations in this section of the industrial park.
